Pretty good Mexican restaurant. I wish their menu was bigger & that they had more alcoholic beverages like margs & pina coladas. Pretty sure they only have beer & sangria.

I'm impressed!
Authentic Mexican food like you find in the places in Mexico that the tourists avoid. Sure, they had the typical crappy stuff on the menu as well but they also had a lot of authentic stuff too. Lots of parts of the cow that people in this country never eat, etc.
Standard chips and salsa turned out to be non-standard upon closer inspection. Their salsa is served warm and has more of a soup consistency. It also has some flavors going on that aren't typical in your average Americanized place that I really liked. I tried to isolate them by eating several chips dipped in the stuff but failed miserably so I'll just say the flavor is complex.
I had a cheese enchilada and a carne asada sopes. Both were good but the sopes was better. I've only recently discovered this dish and I'm still figuring out what I like when I order one. Their version had lettuce, tomato, sour cream, beans, cheese, pickled onions and carne asada. I ate it with a fork because I really didn't want to wear it. Very good!
Also worth mentioning - prices are extremely reasonable.

The best meal I've ever had in my life. It wasn't on the menu but i asked for a barbacoa burrito with queso and salsa verde. Even the chips and salsa were on point. Thank you!!

El Molcajete is truly a hidden gem in Louisville. It’s the only Mexican restaurant in the city where the salsa is made fresh, warm, and right there in-house, paired with homemade tortillas that take the whole experience to another level. From the moment you sit down, the flavor surprises you in the best way. Nothing like the typical cold red salsa from a jar that most places serve. This one is warm, homemade, and unforgettable.
The restaurant is simple, clean, and honest, which makes the food shine even more.
And the service? Impeccable.
The girls working there make you feel like you’re walking into someone’s home, warm, welcoming, and genuinely caring.
The food tastes like tradition, like real cooking, like love.
El Molcajete doesn’t just serve food, it embraces you.

Let me start by saying this is the best 'free table salsa' I've ever had.The restaurant is kind of small (maybe 8-10 tables). We came with a larger party of 10 and were lucky to grab the long table, we were seated comfortably (could provably seat 12). The servers were friendly and attentive. The food did take a bit to come out but was fresh and tasted good. The only negative it that the listed menu prices are not the actual prices. There is a sticker on one of the menu pages that warns about this. We will definitely be returning!
